CHAPTER TEN

Iwas so happy that was over with and even laughed to myself about how nervous I had been to tell Mama. I was much more comfortable for what I was about to do as I sat in the parked Jeep in front of Sylvia Tumblewood’s home on Robin Road, a neighborhood not far from Main Street.

Sylivia’s home was a long ranch with a front porch along the entire front. She had a nice double concrete driveway which allowed me to park next to her car.

“You stay here,” I told Duke because I wasn’t sure if Sylvia was going to welcome me, much less let a dog in her home.

I got out and looked around. I’d been on this street many times as a child. Many of our friends grew up on this street, and the memory of many sleepover nights with us sneaking out just to roam the neighborhood brought a smile to my face.

“Sheriff,” I heard Sylvia call out my title from the side yard. She had a potted fern in her gloved hands. “I hope you have some news. I’ve had to work in my yard all morning long because I can’t keep crying over this.”

I strolled over to her and saw she’d been planting a few garden ferns.

“I don’t have all the answers yet, Sylvia, but I’m working on it,” I said, rolling up my sleeves. “Mind if I help?”

She looked surprised but then nodded, handing me a pair of gloves.

“Sure, Sheriff. I’d appreciate that,” she said.

I knelt down beside her and grabbed a fern, not using the gloves. The soil was cool and moist, sticking to my fingers and inevitably getting on my shirt. I chuckled to myself, thinking about Mama’s monogrammed sheriff shirt now smeared with dirt.

Sylvia glanced over at me, a small smile tugging at the corners of her mouth.

“Never thought I’d see the sheriff gardening,” she noted.

“Never thought I’d be doing it either, but here we are,” I said with a grin. “Sylvia, I wanted to ask you something. When your dad was buried, do you remember anything about a key being buried with him?”

She frowned, thinking hard.

“A key? No, I don’t recall anything like that. Why?” she asked.

“We found a key in his grave,” I said gently, keeping my eyes on her reaction.

Sylvia’s eyes widened in surprise.

“A key? That’s strange. I don’t remember any key. We buried him with a few personal items, but no key,” she confirmed and didn’t need to tell me the items because I already had them on the burial papers.

“That’s what I figured,” I said, patting the dirt around the fern. “It’s possible someone added it later. Did your dad ever mention anything about a key or something he wanted to keep hidden?”

“No, nothing like that.” She shook her head, her face etched with confusion. “My dad was a straightforward man. If he had a secret, I wouldn’t know about it.”

I nodded, leaning back on my heels and wiping my forehead with my dirty sleeve.

“Okay, that helps.
